We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Paula Rochon has joined Sinai Health as the inaugural Director of Research for the Weston and O’Born Centre for Mature Women’s Health.
Dr. Rochon is a leading health services researcher and geriatrician who has spent her career championing research that addresses the unique health needs women experience as they age. She served as the founding director of the Women’s Age Lab at Women’s College Hospital and a senior scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Studies (ICES), an organization dedicated to translating data into trusted evidence that makes policy and health care better and people healthier. Her work has been instrumental in shaping more inclusive, evidence-informed health systems across Canada and beyond.
Her appointment reflects Sinai Health’s continued commitment to addressing gaps and inequities that exist in care and research related to women’s health. It also represents a significant milestone in our efforts to establish the Weston and O’Born Centre for Mature Women’s Health as a world-leader in research, education and care.
“This milestone would not have been possible without the generosity of our community,” says Louis de Melo, President and CEO of Sinai Health Foundation. “Thanks to the incredible support we’ve raised to establish the Centre, we can engage dedicated and top-tier talent like Dr. Rochon to our mission to transform how health care is delivered to women throughout their lives. We are incredibly excited for how Dr. Rochon will partner with Dr. Wendy Wolfman to help us shape this next chapter.”
In addition to her role as Director of Research, Dr. Rochon will join the Department of Medicine at Sinai Health and hold the inaugural Dr. Barry J. Goldlist Chair in Geriatric Medicine. She will also be appointed as a Senior Clinician Scientist at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute.
Dr. Rochon will play an important role in developing and mentoring the next generation of researchers in mature women’s health. She will also work closely with Dr. Wendy Wolfman, Director of the Weston and O’Born Centre for Mature Women’s Health, to deepen our impact in this priority area.
“I’m thrilled to have Dr. Rochon join our team,” says Dr. Wolfman. “She is a respected leader who brings a wealth of knowledge and perspective to her work. Together, we will continue to push for answers to the often-overlooked health concerns of mature women and equip tomorrow’s health-care leaders to better meet their needs.”
Dr. Rochon is also a Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. Her research has led to critical insights into prescribing practices, the under-representation of older women in clinical trials, and how policy can reflect the realities of aging — especially for those living with multiple conditions, including dementia.
She has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers in leading medical journals, including The Lancet, BMJ, Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA and Archives of Internal Medicine. She is also one of Canada’s top 500 cited researchers in medicine.
